As a staff we are committed to establishing high academic standards and excellent conduct. Our motto, “Spread Your Wings”, supports the vision that all students take flight and become life-long learners.
The studious butterfly in our school logo reinforces the idea that change requires effort. Our focus is on student achievement.
Edmonton Public Schools is a district of choice providing a variety of programs to support the needs of students. At James Gibbons School, the staff, the parents and the students have determined that traditional programming best meets our learning needs.
“We believe that children will become good citizens and life-long learners, that they will be able to achieve their ambitions if they are given consistent, structured education with clearly defined standards of academic achievement, supporting traditional values of home and school.”
Traditional values guide our actions. Our school rules state that we are all expected to show self-control, to show respect and to show responsibility. Through the setting of purposeful goals in areas of citizenship and academic achievement and through the provision of fair and firm discipline, traditional values are sustained.
Traditional methods and practices make us unique. We provide direct instruction of basic skills which include the separate instruction of phonics, grammar, spelling, handwriting and mathematics computation. These skills are first taught separately through direct instruction and then they are integrated into the practices of reading, writing, speaking and problem-solving. As a traditional learning community, we continue to adopt those changes that strengthen and support our students. Communities strengthened by an established value system continue to learn and grow strong through innovations.
Our staff is knowledgeable about the curriculum. Resources selected for the traditional program form a building block approach to our instruction. As resources and knowledge are shared across grade levels, there is continuity of instruction.
