History of School Name
Who Was James Gibbons?
1837 – 1933
James Gibbons was a prospector, hunter, trader and farmer. He was born in Ireland and came to North America in 1854.
He came to the Edmonton area in the mid 1860’s, hoping to find gold in the North Saskatchewan River. James Gibbons and his partners invented a sluice box that would wash river sand and gravel away from gold particles. He did find some gold in the river, however he also needed to find other work.
In 1878 he started farming and owned the land in this area, including today’s Laurier Park and the Valley Zoo.
James Gibbons was a hard working pioneer and we are pleased that our school is named after him.
James Gibbons School Council
The School Council can generally be described as a group of parents, a teacher, the principal, and community members who work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of the entire school community and thereby enhance student learning. As an advisory body, the school council facilitates cooperation among all those who have an interest in the programs and policies of the school.
The Parents Association of James Gibbons, the school fundraising organization, works closely with the School Council in identifying projects for financial support. Membership on the executives cross both groups.
School Council and Parent Association meetings are open to all parents and we look forward to more parents taking the initiative to become involved.
